Pet Insurance
We highly recommend pet insurance and encourage you to discuss it with us at your next visit
Pet insurance is becoming more and more popular in Australia. It offers you peace of mind as it covers some or all of the treatment costs if your pet was ever involved in an accident or suffers a sudden illness. There is no equivalent of Medicare for pets, thus often treatment costs exceed what an equivalent problem would cost for a human patient.
There are so many costly conditions that would be covered by pet insurance, for example, snake bites, cruciate repairs, gastritis, diabetes and skin problems.
Did you know that some surgeries such as repair of fractured bones or exploratory surgery can also add up to thousands of dollars and that does not even include the recovery and aftercare treatment. It is a heartbreaking situation to have to choose between the health of your pet and financial constraints, so for peace of mind we strongly recommend that your pet is insured.
There are several insurance companies in Australia. As a veterinary practice, we cannot recommend any company in particular but can give you some guidance as to what to look out for in an insurance company:
- Make sure the insurance is for life and not just an annual cover. Ongoing conditions such as arthritis or diabetes may only be covered for 12 months with annual cover. Also check the age limit for the cover.
- Ask how much the monthly premium and the excess are and how much the insurance company would pay-out per condition. These may vary from company to company.
- It is important to have your pet fully vaccinated as certain conditions may not be covered if the vaccination status is not up to date.
- You also have to inform the insurance company of any pre-existing conditions, as we are obliged to provide them with any relevant history should the occasion arise.
